Year-End Order Planning: How to Beat 2026 Q4 Lead Times

Published October 14, 2026 · 4 min read

Every October, two things happen in motorcycle tire distribution: order lead times stretch from 30 days to 60-90 days, and a meaningful share of orders miss the December retail window. The manufacturers are not at fault. The buyers who planned for it placed their orders in May or June. The buyers who did not are now competing for the same November production slots.

If you are a B2B buyer reading this in mid-October, you have three real options. The first two are uncomfortable. The third is uncomfortable but it works.

Why Q4 Lead Times Stretch

Three forces converge every Q4. First, OEM and brand-name customers lock in production slots in May and June for their model-year programs. By October, those slots are committed. Second, retail buyers in the Northern Hemisphere place reorders in October and November to refill shelves for spring 2027. Third, shipping windows narrow as Tianjin, Shanghai, and Qingdao ports hit peak container volume before Chinese New Year inventory builds.

The result: factories run hot from October through January. Capacity that was a 30-day lead time in July is now 60-90 days. Price negotiations also shift, because the factory knows the buyer has fewer alternatives.

What You Can Still Do This Quarter

Option 1: Place a smaller order now, before Q1 slots fill. If you can absorb 20-30% of your expected Q1 2027 demand with a November shipment, do it. A smaller order locked at today’s price is better than a full order at Q1 spot pricing.

Option 2: Lock price for a January production slot with a smaller deposit. Most factories will accept 20-30% deposit to hold a January or February production slot, with the balance against shipping documents. This is cheaper than the spot market in March and locks the price you quoted in summer.

Option 3: Diversify the container. If your single-source supplier is full, ask which other sizes they can still produce in November. A mixed container of slower-moving sizes in November plus your main sizes in January is usually cheaper than one full container in March at spot pricing.

How to Plan Q1 2027 Right Now

For buyers planning 2027 properly: the Q1 2027 container should be on the water by mid-November 2026. That means the purchase order is in by mid-October. Which is now. The 30-day, 60-day, 90-day lead time ladder applies in the order it sounds: order in October for November shipment, order in November for January shipment, order in December for February shipment. Each month of delay costs one month of inventory.

If you are evaluating Chinese motorcycle tire manufacturers for the first time, the B2B buyer’s guide we published earlier this month covers the full supplier evaluation framework, including the questions that separate a real factory from a trading company.
